Some of the world's largest hedge funds and private equity firms are having a rough week on the cybersecurity front. According to a new Bloomberg report, hackers recently launched a coordinated wave of voice phishing ("vishing") targeted attacks against some of the largest institutional names in finance.
Align's own Vinod Paul, President of Managed Services, spoke with Bloomberg about what's driving this surge. The answer, unsurprisingly, is AI.
The Voice Problem
AI can now clone a person's voice, tone, and speech patterns convincingly enough to fake a phone call from your CFO. Pair that with a spoofed email and an employee has two "confirmations" that both point the same way — straight into a wire transfer or a credential reset they'd never otherwise approve.
The Scale Problem
AI tools have made it cheap and easy for bad actors to run these campaigns at a scale that simply wasn't possible before. As Vinod put it, attacks that once targeted a few dozen firms can now target a thousand.
As recent attacks targeting major hedge funds and private equity firms demonstrate, this threat is already playing out in real time against some of the most sophisticated organizations in the industry.
Why This Matters for Hedge Funds and Private Equity Firms
Financial services firms continue to face increasing pressure from AI-driven cyber threats, including voice phishing, business email compromise, and social engineering. As threat actors use AI to improve both the realism and scale of their campaigns, detection by individual judgment becomes an unreliable last line of defense.
Resilience depends less on whether an employee spots the fake and more on whether the process allows a single deceived person to complete a consequential action.
Firms should therefore invest in controls that hold regardless of who is fooled: callback verification on out-of-band channels, dual authorization for payments and account changes, enforced separation of duties, and defined escalation paths all reinforced by awareness training and tested incident response.
