Event Recap: Advancing Data Center Design Engineering

by: Align

Recently, Align’s Director of Data Center Design & Build, Simon Eventov, was a featured speaker at a San Jose data center event titled: Advancing Data Center Design Engineering. The event was focused on the state of the global data center market, particularly focused on the challenges that design and engineering teams are currently facing as technologies like AI, modular data centers, and HPC continue to rise in popularity.

The Event

FY24Q2 Social Cards (1)Throughout the event there were sessions that spanned multiple aspects of data center design and engineering, but there were a number of discussions focused on the future of power, and liquid cooling. For many newer deployments, liquid cooling is critical, but it is not without its challenges. There are still discrepancies on the best way to design and implement these systems, and the industry is still learning best practices. And from a power perspective, AI and HPC deployments are putting strain on power requirements. Future data center designs need to be flexible and resilient to combat this.

The Panel

Simon Eventov-1Simon was featured on a panel alongside other data center design experts titled "Optimizing Project Delivery with Design Build to Enhance Collaboration Between Project Teams." Mainly, the discussion focused on early communication when it comes to the design and requesting feedback.

Engaging the full ecosystem of manufacturers and partners early in the process helps lead to successful projects. There was heavy emphasis on the fact that feedback from the field needs to make its way back into the planning and design efforts in order to account for new ideas, and feedback about what does and does not work, so you don't make the same mistake twice.

The panel went on top discuss how the focus on construction of a facility is important, but special attention is needed on the whitespace and how the IT racks will "fit" in the facility from a structural, mechanical, electrical, and cabling standpoint. And, to better drive efficiency in the industry as a whole, panelists recommended that bigger builders who are constantly carrying out projects of this nature should share information with the industry as a whole.
