Microsoft Copilot Chat Updates: New Features and Enhancements for 2026

by: Align

When we launched our 2025 Microsoft Copilot blog series, Copilot was already transforming how people create content, analyze data, and collaborate across Microsoft 365.

Since then, Microsoft has continued to rapidly expand the platform, introducing new features and capabilities across its suite of applications. With innovation happening at such a fast pace, it can be difficult to keep up with everything Copilot has to offer.

That's why we're refreshing our Copilot blog series. In this updated collection, we'll revisit the AI-powered features available across Microsoft 365 applications and highlight some of the most impactful enhancements introduced since our original coverage.

In Part 1, we'll explore the latest additions to Copilot Chat and how they can help improve productivity, strengthen collaboration, support governance, and streamline project management. (Note: Some features discussed may require Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Pro licenses.)

Work Securely with Enterprise Data Protection

Copilot Chat provides enterprise data protection when users sign in with their work accounts. Prompts, responses, and any work content included in a conversation are protected under Microsoft's enterprise data commitments and are not used to train foundation models.

Licensing also affects how Copilot grounds its responses. Copilot chat can provide secure, web-grounded answers, while Microsoft Copilot licensing enables deeper integration with organizational content, including files, emails, meetings, and chats that a user has permission to access.

For organizations expanding AI adoption, understanding these protections and licensing differences is essential to using Copilot responsibly.

Notebooks: Keep Project Context in One Place

Instead of starting every chat from scratch, Notebooks allows users to create a dedicated workspace that contains the files, emails, meeting notes, chats, and other resources related to a specific project. Copilot then uses those sources as the foundation for its responses.

This approach helps:

  • Increase response relevance by grounding answers in project-specific materials
  • Bring information from multiple Microsoft 365 sources into one workspace
  • Maintain context for long-term initiatives
  • Improve confidence in AI-generated content through approved source materials

A practical case could be creating a notebook for a client onboarding, cybersecurity assessment, marketing campaign, or technology modernization project.

Get More Accurate Answers with Improved Citations

As organizations increase their use of AI, trust and transparency become increasingly important.

Copilot Chat now provides deeper citations that link directly to the exact content being referenced instead of simply pointing to the source document. This makes it easier to verify information, understand where answers originated, and validate AI-generated insights before sharing them with others.

For organizations operating in regulated industries or managing sensitive business information, this added transparency helps build confidence in AI-assisted work.

Why it matters:

  • Verify information quickly
  • Reduce time spent searching for supporting content
  • Improve accountability when using AI-generated answers
  • Increase trust in Copilot responses

Find Organizational Knowledge with Copilot Search

Microsoft Copilot Search provides a dedicated experience for finding information across Microsoft 365. Using natural language, users can search files, emails, Teams chats, meetings and other connected business systems without needing to know exactly where information is stored.

Search results can include contextual summaries and supporting sources. When deeper analysis is needed, users can continue the experience in Copilot Chat to explore the information, generate content, or complete follow-up work.

Examples include:

  • "Summarize everything we've discussed about the client migration project this month."
  • "What action items were assigned to me during last week's meeting?"
  • "Find the latest presentation related to our cybersecurity strategy."

By turning a single prompt into a cross-platform search, Copilot Chat helps users spend less time hunting for information and more time acting on it.

Get Smarter Responses with GPT-5

Copilot Chat now uses GPT-5 by default, improving how it handles both everyday questions and more complex requests. Copilot can automatically route a prompt to the model best suited to that task. Faster models may handle straightforward requests, while specialized reasoning models can support work that requires deeper analysis or multiple steps.

This gives users a more streamlined experience because they do not need to determine which model is appropriate before every interaction.

Potential use cases include:

  • Drafting an refining communications
  • Summarizing business information
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Analyzing complex topics
  • Planning next steps for a projects

This added flexibility helps users tailor Copilot's capabilities to their specific objectives rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Go Deeper with the Researcher Agent

Copilot Chat is well suited for everyday tasks such as summarizing information, drafting content, and answering questions. For more complex, multi-step research projects, Microsoft has introduced the Researcher Agent.

Researcher is designed to analyze information from multiple sources, including both web content and organizational data available through Microsoft 365. Instead of providing a quick answer, it spends more time evaluating information, identifying key findings, and generating structured reports with supporting citations.

Researcher can help users:

  • Analyze information from multiple sources
  • Combine web and organizational content
  • Generate structured reports with citations
  • Surface key findings and recommendations
  • Reduce manual research time

By helping users collect, analyze, and synthesize information more efficiently, Researcher enables organizations to move from investigation to decision-making faster.

A Smarter Way to Work

Copilot Chat has evolved significantly since our original 2025 overview. What began primarily as a conversational AI assistant has become a centralized hub for research, knowledge discovery, project support, and information retrieval across Microsoft 365.

Features such as Notebooks, deeper citations, enterprise-wide search capabilities, model selection, and advanced research tools help users spend less time searching for information and more time putting it to work. In our next installment, we'll explore the latest enhancements for PowerPoint and how they're helping users create stronger presentations in less time.
