Search results can include contextual summaries and supporting sources. When deeper analysis is needed, users can continue the experience in Copilot Chat to explore the information, generate content, or complete follow-up work.

Copilot Chat now uses GPT-5 by default, improving how it handles both everyday questions and more complex requests. Copilot can automatically route a prompt to the model best suited to that task. Instead of providing a quick answer, it spends more time evaluating information, identifying key findings, and generating structured reports with supporting citations.

Copilot Chat has evolved significantly since our original 2025 overview. What began primarily as a conversational AI assistant has become a centralized hub for research, knowledge discovery, project support, and information retrieval across Microsoft 365.
