From Risk to Reliability: Achieving 98% Inventory Accuracy with Asset Point and ServiceNow

The Overview

A global financial services institution operating more than 200,000 devices worldwide relied solely on ServiceNow to manage tickets, changes, and asset lifecycles across its data centers. While ServiceNow contained vast logical data, physical validation of rack space and capacity was not maintained—a gap that became critical when an overseas installation failed due to cabinets already at capacity.

By deploying Align’s Asset Point data center inventory management tool and Asset Point iOS application, the firm now maintains 98% accurate physical inventory data with bi-directional ServiceNow synchronization, significantly reducing installation delays, onsite rework, and project risk.

The Challenge

The organization initiated a change request in ServiceNow to install multiple new devices at one of their overseas locations. Based on the data in ServiceNow, the required space and power were determined to be available, and the installation was approved.

Upon arrival, an engineer discovered that the designated cabinets were fully populated, with insufficient U-Space and limited power availability.

Because ServiceNow only contained current logical data and did not reflect the physical state of the cabinet, the installation could not proceed as planned, which led to extended project timelines.

The Solution

To close the gap between logical data in ServiceNow and the physical reality of the data center, the organization deployed Asset Point along with its Asset Scan application. Asset Scan, a handheld tool that replaces laptops, lets engineers scan devices, validate details like RU position, serial number, and status, and push updates to Asset Point.

Through scanned validations, a reliable physical layer of record is quickly and easily maintained. The validated data from Asset Scan is synchronized with ServiceNow through bi-directional feeds, so physical inventory updates are reflected in both systems. And because of Asset Point’s flexibility, the integration fits seamlessly into the client’s existing workflows.

With Asset Point:

  • Onsite teams validate cabinet conditions using Asset Scan
  • Verified physical data is synchronized back to ServiceNow without disrupting existing workflows
  • Engineers confirm cabinet layouts, RU availability, and power capacity before arriving onsite

The Results

By complementing ServiceNow with validated physical data, the firm improved planning accuracy and reduced operational risk across its global data center footprint.

Key outcomes include:

  • Fewer failed or delayed installations due to unexpected capacity constraints
  • Reduced onsite rework and project overruns
  • Increased confidence in change approvals and execution
