One of the oldest independent money management firms in the U.S. engaged Align to relocate their disaster recovery environment from a SunGard data center in New Jersey to a DBSi data center in Pennsylvania. As part of this relocation, their Production VMAX frame was to be swapped out, requiring a reboot of their entire production environment.
The strategy for swapping the hardware included devising a reboot schedule, migration strategy and communication plan for the business partners involved with the swap. The reboot involved 58 servers, 172 server virtual machines and 19 desktop virtual machines. To remain on schedule given the hardware swap, data migration tools were used to migrate data from the disaster recovery machines to the production machine without rebooting a majority of the servers. 25 storage devices were rebooted, including critical trading and client-facing systems.
The production machine swap, data migrations and server reboots were completed successfully without impact to the business or external clients. This project led to two additional data center projects with the client, including decommissioning one of their data centers and relocating their business continuity environment.
