For many companies in the Greater New York City area, Hurricane Sandy underscored the importance of having a solid disaster recovery plan in place for IT services. In 2012, Acorda Therapeutics was in the midst of disaster recovery planning when the storm’s impact reminded the New York-based biotech firm just how critical the location of one’s “hot site” can be. Acorda engaged the Align advisory services team to help select a colocation facility to meet the requirements of a secondary data center that would fulfill their business continuity planning needs. After deciding on a location, Acorda also looked to Align to build and manage the migration to the new site.
After meeting with Acorda’s management team, Align compiled a comprehensive requirements matrix for the future colocation facility. One major requirement was that the new facility be located west of the Mississippi so that Acorda would have a data center outside of the East Coast that could also be used as a location for future business expansion.
Once the requirements were solidified, Align used its colocation, database and industry knowledge and engaged its established relationships to create a strong list of colocation vendors that met Acorda’s needs. Align evaluated proposal responses, conducted interviews, performed site evaluations and presented recommendations to Acorda’s executive management.
Upon selection of the new data center, Align worked closely with the colocation vendor to ensure the space would meet Acorda’s needs in order to be move-in ready. Align managed the migration activities with all vendors including storage, packing and shipping and carried out physical relocation and cabling services on both ends.
Acorda now has an active data center west of the Mississippi for disaster recovery and new business expansion. The facility meets all of their needs with Align as a partner who provides flexible support to meet Acorda’s growth.
